- First point: there is only one chain here. It has both internal and
- external parts, but there is only one.
-
- As I read the diagram, the 340M hard drive is at the physical end of the
- internal cable, and the CD-ROM is at the end of the external cable. As
- such, both should be terminated, and all the other devices *including the
- A3000 motherboard* should be unterminated.
-
- : 1)I was under the impression that SCSI buses required the all the termination

- : or is it just a recommendation? What are the issues of not removing them?
-
- It is required in the sense that the SCSI spec says it is! 8-) If a SCSI
- bus is improperly terminated, you'll get random read/write errors and
- other spurious problems. It may work for a while, and some people have
- few enough errors that they think it is just normal operation.
-
- : 2)My machine has a separate power supply for the external devices. Without all
- : devices being powered up the machine will not boot. However with the tape
- : drive and one SCSI harddrive connected my machine can boot without these
- : devices being powered up. The same holds true for the CDROM and one harddrive.
- : What might be causing this anomaly? Is there a way to get it so my machine
- : can boot regardless of whether the external devices are powered up or not?
-
- Could be a termination power supply issue. Many A3000s had a
- manufacturing flaw that prevented them from supplying termination power
- to the external DB25 SCSI connector. It sounds like one of the external
- devices is supplying termpower, so when it is on, all is fine. To
- verify, check pin 25 of the DB25 for +5V. (With power on; of course, all
- normal warnings apply.)
